Paisas<\/em> (locals) roll their eyes every time the \u2018P\u2019 word comes up in conversation with travellers or newcomers to the Valley \u2013 they\u2019ve heard it all before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAyyy nooo, es que hay much\u00edsimos barrios m\u00e1s que conocer. T\u00f3mate un tinto y te cuento mis sitios favoritos, mi rey\/ mi reina.\u201c <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Translation: Noo… There are so many other neighbourhoods you can visit. Have a coffee and I’ll tell you my fave spots, my king\/queen (yes you get called this a lot in Colombia, bit of an ego boost!) <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re not wrong. Poblado may be sky high and fancy, have the buzz of Parque Lleras and party hostels but there\u2019s more to Medallo<\/em> than its poster boy barrio down south. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s some alternatives that\u2019ll make you glad you plucked up the courage to leave Calle 10 for a taste of the other side\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grab a coffee at Caf\u00e9 Revolucion <\/em>then get stuck into a book in leafy Primer Parque. Locals head to Avenida Jardin\u2019s tiendas for a stroll before before live music at Caf\u00e9 Clich\u00e9<\/em> or Naturalia Caf\u00e9 <\/em>. Others get rowdy at a football game at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot<\/em> before drinking their way down la 70 – sweaty Tiburi<\/em> and Son Havana<\/em> are top salsa spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UPB (Universidad Pontifica Boliviariana) students, gringos (foreigners) here \u2018for good\u2019, Nacional football fans, foodies<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picnic in the park or cheat and eat from the food trucks. This place is packed with jugglers, slacklines and overexcitable baby bulldogs.  Afternoons merge into dusky evenings and families are swapped for a younger crowd. Try an indie movie at MAMM\u2019s<\/em> cinema (sometimes outdoor) before a night at Cerveceria Libre<\/em> or rooftop bar 1984<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young families, skaters, sunbathers, students from EAFIT, dog owners, people who want to be dog owners…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casa de la Memoria<\/em> is Medellin\u2019s first museum to talk about its tough past \u2013 an interactive homage to those who lost their lives in the drug war and a reminder of how far the city has come. After the museo head over to Parque De Boston <\/em>for a Pilsen (Sanalejo artesan market<\/em> takes place here every 1st and 3rd Saturday). Teatro Pablo Tob\u00f3n Uribe<\/em> <\/em>and bar Taberna Diagones <\/em>are just round the corner on La Playa.

Or head to El Aula<\/em> courtyard for a candlelit dinner. \u00a0Caf\u00e9 La Piloto\u2019s<\/em> got a line- up of cultural talks and movie nights or chill at the Centro Cultural Facultad de Artes Universidad de Antioquia<\/em>. ExLibris<\/em> is the place to unwind with a good book and if you\u2019re in to German pizza\u2026 Bigotes<\/em> has people queuing out the door.

Ask for the Menu del Dia<\/em> (super cheap lunch meal with soup, main and all the trimmings) and a jugo de lulo (juice) at Plaza de Mercado in Envigado. If that didn\u2019t fill you up, the empanadas with salsa de mora at La Catedral<\/em> will hit the spot. And if you\u2019re craving fresh air, the hike up to Arenales<\/em> and the waterfall is a bus ride away or El Salado<\/em> eco park. Nights start up in the mountain at Mahalo<\/em> restaurant-bar & skatepark and end with a bottle of guaro<\/em> (aguardiente) at one of the bars on the Parque de Envigado main square…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
